About The Winery

Country: Portugal
Region:
Douro Valley

The 10-Year-Old Tawny is often considered the most versatile of all Ports, representing the first major milestone in the art of wood aging. At Quinta da Côrte, this wine is designed to capture a specific moment of equilibrium: the point where the vibrant, primary fruit of the grape begins to yield to the complex, spicy notes of the oak, without losing its energy. It is not a wine from a single harvest, but a skillful blend of several vintages aged in seasoned oak casks, with the average age of the blend being ten years. The estate's philosophy prioritizes elegance and a "digestible" freshness over heavy sweetness, making this a particularly lively example of the style.

Terroir: The grapes are harvested from the estate's steep, schist-covered slopes in the Cima Corgo. This poor, rocky soil imparts a distinct mineral backbone that keeps the wine fresh despite the sugar and alcohol.

Style: An Oxidative Port that bridges two worlds. It retains the memory of red fruit found in younger wines but introduces the nutty, amber character derived from oxygen contact through the wood.

Vinification: Following traditional foot-treading in granite lagares to extract structure, the wine is transferred to 600-liter oak casks. Unlike large vats which minimize oxygen contact, these smaller barrels allow the wine to "breathe" slowly over a decade, oxidizing the color and concentrating flavors.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A beautiful brick-red core fading to a jagged, amber-orange rim. It is lighter than a Ruby but retains more reddish hues than older Tawnies.

Nose: Fresh and inviting. It offers a harmonious mix of dried fruits and candied orange peel, underpinned by the first signs of nutty complexity, toasted almonds and a hint of vanilla pod.

Palate: Smooth and round, but with a distinct "kick." The sweetness is moderate and well-integrated. Flavors of fruitcake, honey, and wood spice coat the mouth, but the finish is lifted by a zesty acidity and a slight saline touch, leaving the palate clean rather than sticky.
