About The Winery
Country: France
Region: Beaujolais, Burgundy
The 2022 Morgon “La Roche Pilée” by Jean-Paul and Charly Thévenet is a distinguished expression of Beaujolais' Morgon cru, reflecting both the family's commitment to natural winemaking and the unique terroir of the region. Jean-Paul Thévenet, a pivotal figure in the natural wine movement, was one of the original "Gang of Four" vignerons who championed traditional, low-intervention winemaking in Beaujolais. His son, Charly, continues this legacy, emphasising biodynamic practices and minimal intervention to produce wines that authentically express their origins.
Vinification:
The Thévenets employ biodynamic farming methods, avoiding synthetic chemicals and focusing on soil health. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged in concrete vats, allowing for a pure expression of fruit and terroir without the influence of oak.
Terroir:
Sourced from a 1.25-hectare vineyard planted between 1953 and the 1980s, “La Roche Pilée” sits on decomposed granite soils in Morgon, Beaujolais. This soil composition imparts a distinct minerality to the wine, aligning with the vineyard's name, which translates to "crushed rock."
