About The Winery

Country: France
Region: Corsica

Domaine San Micheli is a historic, family-owned estate situated in the heart of the Ortolo Valley, one of the most rugged and beautiful corners of southern Corsica. Rooted in the region since the 18th century, the family is dedicated to preserving the authentic character of traditional Corsican grape varieties. This red wine captures the wild, untamed essence of the surrounding coastal scrubland and the distinct maritime influence of the Mediterranean.

Terroir: The vineyards are planted on steep hillsides composed of decomposed granite sands. This dry, sun-drenched valley benefits from the cooling influence of a steady sea breeze that tempers the intense summer heat. This unique microclimate ensures a slow, even ripening, preserving the natural freshness of the grapes while the granitic soil imparts a distinct mineral tension.

Style: A Sciaccarellu and Niellucciu style.

Vinification: The winemaking honors tradition to maintain pure fruit expression. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in concrete vats. The wine is then aged for up to 18 months, primarily in concrete tanks with a carefully managed portion in oak barrels. This maturation softens the tannins and develops a silky texture while allowing the wild, savory aromatics of the Sciaccarellu grape to take center stage.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A deep, vibrant garnet red with profound vermilion reflections.

Nose: Expressive, complex, and wild. It opens with intense primary aromas of ripe dark cherry, wild blackberry, and crushed peony flowers. As it breathes, it reveals deeply savory and earthy layers characteristic of the Corsican terroir, including notes of white truffle, dried wild herbs, and a subtle touch of dark ink.

Palate: Elegant, fluid, and beautifully balanced. The attack is fresh and silky, supported by a framework of very fine, polished tannins. Flavors of crisp red fruits and a delicate earthiness dominate the mid-palate. The finish is remarkably long, clean, and finely spiced, leaving a lingering, thirst-quenching mineral note.
