About The Winery

Country: Switzerland
Region:
Valais

The name of this cuvée, "L'Orage" (The Thunderstorm), is not merely poetic: it is literal. The summer of 2015 was marked by a violent hailstorm that devastated the steep vineyards of Beudon. Faced with widespread damage, the Granges family made a radical decision: rather than making their usual separate cuvées, they harvested the "survivor" grapes together. Thus, this wine is a unique style born of necessity, composed of Pinot Noir, Gamay and Gamaret that withstood the elements. It is a testament to the resilience of these high located vines and a liquid snapshot of a chaotic yet solar year.

Terroir: The vines are perched on a dizzying plateau of granite and gneiss in Fully. This siliceous soil is harder and colder than limestone, imparting a vibrating energy and verticality that defines the Beudon signature.

Style: A "wild" and energetic red wine. It defies easy categorization, merging the elegance of Pinot, the fruit of Gamay, and the spicy structure of Gamaret. It is unpolished, vibrant, and alive.

Vinification: 100% Biodynamic (Demeter). The grapes were co-fermented (or assembled) with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine was aged on fine lees for 11 months without filtration or fining, and with little to no added sulfur.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A hazy, deep garnet red with ruby reflections. The lack of filtration gives it a slightly turbid, authentic appearance.

Nose: Explosive and evolving. It opens with wild, untamed aromas of forest berries and crushed rocks. As it breathes, complex notes of white pepper, "garrigue" herbs, and a hint of aloe vera or blood orange emerge.

Palate: Taut and electric. Despite the solar heat of 2015, the wine is driven by a spine of granite acidity. It feels juicy and sappy, with flavors of tart cherry and savory spices. The finish is long and saline, leaving a clean, thirst-quenching sensation that belies its concentration.
