About The Winery

Country: Switzerland
Region:
Valais

Domaine de Beudon is a place of extremes. Located on a small plateau high above the Rhone Valley, the estate is accessible only by a steep cable car or a treacherous footpath. It was the first estate in Switzerland to be certified biodynamic, a vision championed by the late Jacques Granges and continued by his family. While Fendant (the Swiss name for Chasselas) is often dismissed as a simple aperitif wine, Beudon’s "Vieilles Vignes" (Old Vines) bottling proves the grape can convey profound terroir. These deep-rooted vines interact with the unique geology of the cliff, producing a wine of nervous energy and surprising longevity.

Terroir: Unlike the limestone-heavy soils found in much of the Valais, the vines in Fully grow on granite and gneiss. This crystalline rock, combined with the intense Alpine sun, gives the wine a flinty, smoky character often compared to Riesling.

Style: A "natural" and uncompromising white wine. The estate does not filter heavily and uses minimal sulfur. To protect the wine during aging, they bottle it with its natural carbon dioxide, giving it a signature "spritz" or fizz upon opening.

Vinification: Strictly biodynamic farming. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The "Vieilles Vignes" designation implies lower yields and higher concentration, allowing the wine to age for 10 to 20 years easily.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A pale, shimmering gold. Distinctive tiny bubbles are usually visible on the glass walls, a hallmark of the Beudon style.

Nose: Sharp and mineral-driven. It is dominated by "gunflint" or struck stone aromas, layered with notes of wild Alpine herbs and fresh citrus peel.

Palate: Energetic and vibrating. The natural CO2 provides a prickly, fresh sensation on the tongue. It is not a broad, fruity wine, but rather taut and saline, with flavors of lemon zest and green almond. The finish is dry and persistent, marked by the classic Chasselas bitterness that stimulates the appetite.
