Bedoba Reserve: A Taste of Kvareli's Terroir

The Saperavi grapes for this reserve wine come from vines planted in 1984, growing around the historical village of Kvareli in the heart of the Kakheti region. These vines are rooted in the region’s characteristic black slate soil, which reaches a depth of 8 meters. The unique deep black slate soils of Kvareli make it challenging for the vines to access the necessary water, as the soil does not retain moisture. At the same time, these black slate soils impart a distinctive elegance, lightness, and minerality to the wine. As a result, yields are typically low, averaging around 3,000 kg per hectare.

The Story behind the label

Georgia’s most revered saint, Saint Nino, arrived in the 4th century, carrying a cross woven from grapevines— bestowed upon her in a dream by the Holy Virgin Mary. Sent to preach Christianity to a pagan land, she performed miraculous healings, eventually converting Queen Nana to her faith. The turning point came when King Mirian of Georgia, while on a hunting trip, was suddenly struck blind by a bolt of lightning. Desperate, he called upon his pagan gods, but his prayers went unanswered. In his final moment of despair, he invoked "Nino’s God", speaking these words: "God of Nino, enlighten thee this night for me and guide my steps in proclaiming Thy Holy Name. I will erect Thy Cross and worship Thee and build Thy Temple with Love and Veneration. I will be loyal to Nino and her faith in Thy Love. " As he finished his prayer, light returned to him, and in that moment, he embraced Christianity. In the year 326 AD, he declared it the state religion of Georgia. This act not only transformed Georgia’s spiritual path but also solidified its cultural and winemaking heritage, deeply intertwined with faith and the land.

The label artwork depicts this profound moment—King Mirian praying with his entourage beside Saint Nino, invoking her God. It was created by Olivera, an artist who lives in the remote mountains of Montenegro. Inspired by the raw beauty of nature and the spiritual depth of Georgia’s history, her work captures the soul of Bedoba Reserve.

Bedoba Reserve truly expresses its origins, shaped by Kvareli's deep black slate soils and traditional Qvevri maturation. This wine offers a rich, complex profile with aromas of dark berries, wild alpine herbs, delicate floral notes, and a hint of cracked black pepper. On the palate, it masterfully balances power and elegance, showcasing bold, spiced fruit flavors, refined minerality, and a silky texture. Subtle complexity from low-toast oak adds depth without overpowering. The finish is long, structured, sophisticated, and remarkably pure.
Very versatile, it will pair beautifully with all sorts of meat dishes and blue cheeses.
