About The Winery

Jean Dirler and his wife Ludivine, sensitive and seasoned winemakers, expertly manage this estate founded in 1871 and passed down from father to son for five generations.

Situated in a semi-continental climate featuring very hot, dry summers (Colmar is one of the driest cities in France) and extreme winters with frequent snow, the family pioneered the very first Crémant d'Alsace at a time when Champagne was booming across Europe. Today, nearly half of their 18-hectare estate sits in prestigious Grands Crus and select lieux-dits.

Long before natural winemaking became a trend, the estate operated on the motto "natural wines, fine wines," converting to full biodynamic viticulture in 1998. Their methods include horse-plowing, manual harvesting, whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentations, and extended lees aging.

Regardless of the grape variety, the balance, density, and ripeness of the wines have never been more refined: an impressive range of great dry white wines culminates in the magnificent expressions of the Spiegel, Saering, Kessler, and Kitterlé grands crus, which are an absolute must-try, and which are now named after the four elements (fire, air, earth, water). The resulting expressive, complex wines grace tables ranging from three-star Michelin restaurants to natural wine fairs.

Tasting Notes

In the cellar, the philosophy is to let nature take its course. Fermentation of the Riesling Grand Cru "Kessler" Élément Feu starts spontaneously thanks to indigenous
yeasts, with no artificial temperature control. The grapes are pressed whole, without prior destemming. The wine then undergoes extended aging on the lees, carried out in stainless steel tanks or in large traditional oak foudres, which gives it a complex texture and a singular aromatic depth.

This is a dense and mineral Grand Cru Riesling. It’s powerful on the nose, with aromas of lemon, orange, tropical fruit, verbena, acacia, and mint. Supported by elegant acidity, this is a supremely age-worthy bottle. Riesling Grand Cru Kessler is dense, taut, crisp, mineral with a very long mouthfeel. Powerful bouqet of lemon, orange, tropical fruits, verbena, acacia and mint. The acidity brings an elegant lift and the complexity is extreme. This wine can age for a
very long period.

“The palate is beautifully linear, tense like a highwire, beautifully bold and so clear-cut. It has a gorgeous concentration on a smooth, linear trajectory.” - 4 g/l residual sugar – perfect with lemon chicken tajine.
