About The Winery
Hard to find, exceptional year!
Château Montrose is a highly respected Second Classified Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) from the 1855 Bordeaux classification, situated in the Saint-Estèphe appellation and often nicknamed "The Latour of Saint-Estèphe." The estate's history begins with Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, who, starting in 1815, cleared the heath-covered hillside overlooking the Gironde estuary and planted the first vines; the name Montrose ("pink mountain") comes from the pink heather that once covered the hill. Its immediate potential was recognized in the 1855 Classification, making it the youngest property to be included. Later, the great builder Mathieu Dollfus acquired the estate in 1866, developing the famous "Montrose village" for workers and saving many vines from phylloxera by flooding the land with a windmill system, a structure that remains a symbol of the Château today.
After over a century of ownership by the Charmolüe family, the estate was purchased in 2006 by the billionaire Bouygues brothers, who embarked on a massive, seven-year, environmentally conscious renovation project using geothermal and solar energy
