About The Winery

Country: France
Region: Bordeaux

"La Dame de Montrose" is the second wine of Château Montrose. Created in 1983, La Dame is produced from the same unique vineyard as the Grand Vin. It is simply sourced from plots that are more approachable in their youth, often those with a higher proportion of Merlot. The 2018 vintage was spectacular in Bordeaux, marked by a warm summer, but the deep clay soils of Montrose retained enough moisture to prevent the vines from shutting down. The result is a wine that delivers the power of Saint-Estèphe with a silky, voluptuous texture.

Terroir: The vineyard sits on the unique hill of "Mont Rose" overlooking the Gironde estuary. The soil is a mix of deep gravel and sand over a vital subsoil of clay. This clay is the secret to the estate's consistency, keeping the vines cool and hydrated even in scorching years like 2018.

Style: A dense and fleshy Saint-Estèphe. The 2018 style is dominated by Merlot, giving it a luscious mid-palate that balances the structural backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc adding spice and complexity.

Vinification: The grapes are harvested plot-by-plot and fermented in stainless steel tanks to maintain precision. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, allowing for a gentle micro-oxygenation that polishes the tannins.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A profound, inky crimson with violet reflections, typical of the concentration of 2018.

Nose: Rich and generous. It bursts with aromas of ripe black cherries, blueberries, and crème de cassis. Beneath the fruit, there are sophisticated notes of graphite, peony flowers, and a hint of cold ash or smoke.

Palate: Unctuous and structured. The attack is incredibly soft and round, thanks to the ripe Merlot. However, the Saint-Estèphe character quickly asserts itself with a core of powerful, tightly knit tannins that are ripe, not green. The finish is long, saline, and marked by savory notes of licorice and dark chocolate.
