About The Winery

Country: France
Region: Bordeaux

Located in the village of Valeyrac in the northern Médoc, Château Le Bourdieu is an estate with a history dating back to 1830. Its architecture is unique, built in a "Chartreuse" style that is rare for the region. The estate benefits from a privileged location near the Gironde estuary, which acts as a thermal regulator, protecting the vines from extreme temperature shifts. This 2020 vintage is part of a glorious trilogy in Bordeaux; it is a solar, powerful year that produced wines of great density. Le Bourdieu stands out as a classic, reliable Médoc that offers the structure of the great wines of the Left Bank with an approachability that belies its serious pedigree.

Terroir: The vineyard sits on a mix of gravel and clay-limestone soils. The gravel provides heat retention and drainage for the Cabernet, while the clay offers cool moisture for the Merlot, crucial in a hot summer like 2020.

Style: A robust and classic Left Bank red that balances the architectural structure and dark berry intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon with the generous, fleshy roundness provided by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot.

Vinification: Traditional vinification in stainless steel and concrete tanks to manage extraction. The wine is then aged for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels (merrain), which polishes the tannins and adds a layer of toasted complexity.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A deep, concentrated purple-red, almost opaque, characteristic of the 2020 vintage.

Nose: Expressive and noble. It opens with intense aromas of cassis and ripe plum, typical of the region. As it aerates, it reveals attractive notes of cedar wood, sweet tobacco, and a hint of vanilla from the barrel aging.

Palate: Structured and savory. The attack is frank and full-bodied. There is a solid core of black fruit supported by firm, ripe tannins that promise good aging potential. The influence of the estuary is felt in the finish, which remains fresh and saline despite the wine's power.
